The Predators and Editors Readers' Poll Results Are In!

Sin Eater Keta Diablo took me on a fast paced ride. I’ve never imagined Wales to be as beautiful as her description. Lost in her world, I found myself captivated by the characters, both villain and hero. The plot thickened just when I’d thought it would taper, leaving me breathless, on the same journey of both Andras and Owen. Their ending surpassed my initial thoughts and delighted me. I’ve never seen anyone write like Keta Diablo. I enjoyed this read and give it the Recommended Read Award.

Thanks to Twilight and True Blood, vampires are hot and sexy again, but while Blood and Coffee taps into that trend it is definitely more of a horror fantasy than a straightforward erotic novel. Many of the characters here come to grisly ends, so it's not for the squeamish, but Lisa Lane manages to keep the action moving at a relentless pace while detailing Karen's conversion from human to vampire and all the dilemmas she faces along the way. This is the first part in a trilogy, and there are enough clues as to how the action will progress to ensure those who like a bit of gore with their sexual tension will hunt down the second and third volumes.

Five Things I Love About The Sin Eater’s Prince by Keta Diablo

Sin eater: One gifted with magic, able to absorb the sins of a dying person so that person’s soul is free to go unencumbered to heaven. In Keta Diablo’s paranormal erotic romance The Sin Eater’s Prince, the sin eater is Owen Rhys, a pariah in his small village in Wales. Since his father died, Owen’s only friend is Carys, the physician’s assistant. Owen harbors a secret longing for Carys’s employer, the unbelievable beautiful healer Andras Maddock. Andras has his own magical secret: he’s a long tooth, a vampire. Their undeniable attraction puts Owen in grave danger. There is much to love in this lush novel from Ravenous Romance; here are my five favorites.

1. The hypnotic cover. From under a gray hood, the vampire stares at us. His eyes are icy blue, his hair and long eyelashes black, his gaze both beautiful and terrifying. This is Dagan, a nasty—but gorgeous—vamp who threatens to put a serious damper on Owen and Andras’s relationship. The cover perfectly captures what Owen feels: attraction and revulsion at once toward this terrible being.

2. The Welsh language and lore. The native, Celtic language of Wales is notoriously difficult (and un-phonetic) for English speakers. They spell Wales “Cymru,” for crying out loud! Keta Diablo’s story is laced with strange Welsh folklore, history, and myth, as well as those lovely Celtic words. Lest the reader be unable to keep up, though, there is a glossary of Welsh terms, from Annwyn to Uffern.

3. The vampire’s prayer. Dagan offers an eerily beautiful but chilling prayer to his Dark Lord, the devil. For readers who like their vamps scary and dangerous, the vampire’s prayer delivers just the right touch of evil. An excerpt: “Whatever flows through your body, flows through mine. I am in your likeness, he who feeds on the warm, red elixir of life. I am the dreaded vampire, a blessed composition of your energy, lust and desire. My day is the mortal’s night, my sustenance their blood. When earth has witnessed its last day, I shall rise again and serve you for all eternity.”

4. The kisses. In this very sensual novel, Owen and Andras crave one another’s touch. No parts of their heavenly bodies go unexplored as they make love desperately, ecstatically. Each encounter begins when Andras looks into Owen’s beautiful green eyes…and then they kiss. Keta Diable is skilled in the art of taut sexual tension, turning up the heat until it boils over with every steamy kiss in passages like this: “Owen’s touch on his arm, the taste of his lips melding with his, sent a jolt of unbearable pleasure rushing through him. The sin eater’s fingers wound their way into the hair at the back of his neck and Owen drew him deeper into the kiss. Andras parted his lips with his tongue, evoking a breathless moan and a defenseless surrender of his body against Owen’s.”

5. Carys. Even a boy-meets-boy romance can use a female character to root for; in The Sin Eater’s Prince, that woman is Carys. Loyal, determined, and clear-headed (despite her tendency to believe in Welsh superstitions), she is a true friend to both Owen and Andras. Carys is less damsel in distress and more Celtic warrior woman. Lovers of paranormal erotic fiction will find The Sin Eater’s Prince irresistible for these, and many other, reasons. It contains a well-crafted world of British Isles magic, wonder, and romance.

Setup: Owen pages through one of his tad's (father's) history books to learn about vampires.

Excerpt:

An innate sense of curiosity drew Owen to the hearth, and specifically to the nearby wooden crate. Shortly after his father passed, he’d relegated the man’s meager possessions and his collection of cherished books to the trunk and hadn’t looked at the contents since. If memory served him, he’d find not only several volumes on Welsh history, but another on legend and lore of Wales.

Removing the lid from the crate, he sorted through the books until he found what he searched for, Demons and Other Mystical Creatures of Wales. Thumbing through the pages quickly, he found the chapter entitled Lords of the Underworld: Vampyres.

He swallowed the lump in his throat and scanned the page, his eyes settling on a passage in the middle: The vampyre is the most dreaded and feared creature of the supernatural world. He’s not only obtained immortality, but has the ability to alter his appearance, fly through the night sky, and traverse the ground under the guise of the wolf or a wisp of smoke. After seducing his victims through hypnotic measures or mind control, the vampyre will drain them of their blood thereby bolstering his strength and power. A vampyre might possess beauty beyond one’s imagination or be hideously marked.

Owen’s heart launched into a triple beat and a fine bead of sweat broke out on his forehead. The mouth is thought to be the way the soul leaves the body, and also the way evil spirits are allowed to enter. If one has slain a vampyre in, it is advised the mouth be stuffed with a consecrated object or stitched shut and sprinkled with holy water.

Owen turned the page with an acute sense of trepidation and read his third and final passage: Spiritual vampyres draw the life energy from their victims and at times, their very souls. This species of vampyre does not merely feed on blood but the victim’s essence in order to survive.

He slammed the book shut, tossed it back into the crate and replaced the lid. Then he rose and paced the cottage, the words from the tome tumbling through his head. He didn’t need to read the passages to know Maddock was a vampire; the man had admitted it. What he wouldn’t give to have known Andras before he arrived in Pembrokeshire. Had he always possessed such unearthly beauty or had he accrued it since Traherne turned him?

And what species of long tooth was Traherne? Had he not only fed on Andras’s blood, but sucked the very soul from the man? Andras, soulless? Nay, it could not be. He’d witnessed innumerable acts of compassion from the man while ministering to the sick, watched his eyes flood with empathy when they passed into the other world.

His intestines wound their way into a reef knot. Had Maddock played him false with his words of coveting him from afar and holding a place for him in his heart? Were those the words of a demon possessed of hypnotic capabilities or the words of a man who cared deeply?

The questions festered and churned until Owen knew only one thing: Maddock was a very dark and very beautiful vampire.

I love historical books that take place during the Civil War Era, this book did not disappoint me. This book contains steamy scenes and graphic language. The characters make this book.

Sophia, Gavin and Jesse have been friends since childhood. Jesse and Sophia have been pledged to marriage from birth. Gavin hides his deep love for Sophia. Gavin was a Yankee and fought as one.

The war is coming to an end and Sophia Whitfield has lost everything, her friends, her family, Jesse and Gavin. Lately she has been having dreams of Jesse. She just knows he will return safe and they will be married.

She didn’t recognize Gavin when he walked down the road in his Yankee. She shot him. He has a bullet hole in his chest. She and two slaves try to save Gavin.

Gavin is a besieged man. War is hard on a person and he is carrying secrets that torment him. He has news for Sophia but as the days go by their passion for each other grows. Sophia is waiting for Jesse to return. Her feelings for Gavin grows as Billy Cooper swears he will have her as his wife She know it is only because he wants Arbor Rose, Sophia’s homestead.

Eventually Sophia finally learns the real reason why Gavin returned to her home. Her feelings are mixed. The relationship waffles from hot to cold.

Land of Falling Stars is filled with passion, heartache, and pride. I hope there is a sequel in the works. This is a good read.

As much as Owen would like to be with Andras permanently he has made an oath to his father, but so has Andras. Keta Diablo tells a wonderful little story that is really more of an encounter that could actually go on to tell a much deeper tale of love and I hope this does turn into a novel, or at least few more shorts that continues this love story.

Ravenous Romance Lands HUGE Media Deal!

On Monday, for the first time, HSN (HOME SHOPPING NETWORK)will be offering up copies of eight selected romance novels, one of which, LAND OF FALLING STARS, was penned by Keta Diablo. This is the Home Shopping Network's first foray into selling novels.

The segments, themed “Escape With Romance,” will appear twice Monday and again early Tuesday morning, according to the schedule on the show's site, HOME SHOPPING NETWORK ESCAPE WITH ROMANCE

Each segment is an hour long. The first, from 8-9 a.m. on September 14th will feature Holly Schmidt from Ravenous Romance, a Beverly, Mass.-based publishing house. The show returns in the 4-5 p.m. timeslot that afternoon, and then, for the insomniac audience, airs again from 3-4 a.m. Tuesday.

RAVENOUS ROMANCE

Keta:
I’m a huge Civil War buff. I came across an article about cousins who lived in Georgia, were best friends, and yet fought against one another in the war. That sent me down a path of what ifs, what if two men loved the same woman, they were best friends and yet one fought for the North the other for the South? What if one killed the other accidentally in battle? The sub-plots conjured a bucket load of conflict and in romance, conflict is a must. The more the better.

Phoebe:
How did you come up with the concepts for your previous novels Dust and Moonlight and Decadent Deceptions?

Keta:
Dust and Moonlight was my first fantasy. I had never written one before and some fellow authors asked me to write a short story for their anthology. Before it was released, the reviews were very positive. I pulled Dust and Moonlight from the anthology as soon as they found a replacement and lengthened it into a full length novel.

I wrote Decadent Deceptions for the 2008 Molly Contest and was thrilled to receive notification I made the finals in the erotica category. After that, the story was placed with NOBLE ROMANCE.

Phoebe:
Do you have a process of how you start to write your novels?

Keta:
I admit I’m a “panster”, no outlines, no note cards. I plot the story in my head for months and when I’ve gone through every scene, every conversation between the characters, I sit down to write. The first scene I write might end up in the middle of the book, and often I work backwards. This seems to work for me and gives me free rein with the plot and the characters. It is rather unconventional, I think.

Phoebe:
Which do you like best, writing a series or writing stand alone novels? How is writing each different for you?

Keta:
Series are a huge undertaking and you must plan far ahead. Your secondary characters need to be strong enough to support a story of their own. And the plot has to be sustainable for long-term interest with your readers. Stand-alones are easier, yet must also be compelling. Competition out there is very stiff, so your writing and story, no matter whether they are stand-alones or series, must draw your reader in and hook them from the beginning.

Phoebe:
What process did you have to go through to get your first book published and did it take you long?

Keta:
I was blessed when the first book I wrote was accepted by a medium-sized e-publisher. I'm very grateful for the opportunity. I learned a lot along the way and am happy I started out on a low rung of the ladder. You can’t enjoy the peak of the mountain if there isn’t adversity and angst along the way.

Phoebe:
How did you feel when you finally saw your first published book came out and how do you feel about your other novels being published?

Keta:
Like every author I was thrilled. I write because I love it. It’s like breathing air. I can’t imagine not writing, not even if my books didn’t sell.

Phoebe:
How do you handle your writing schedule and your personal life without going insane?

Keta:
Personal life? Is this a trick question? I don’t have much of a personal life. I imagine you’d hear that from most authors. There are deadlines, commitments, promises to keep. So my motto is: “Keep on trucking.” Sleep is elusive, entertainment is rare, and movies and television are almost non-existent. Are you sure you want to be a writer? I bet most readers think we travel around in limos and eat Godiva chocolates whenever we want. That’s so far from the truth. Most days, you’ll find me plugging away at the computer in raggedy jeans with a cat sitting on my mouse and a dog curled up at my feet.

Phoebe:
What do you do to relax after having spent a long while writing?

Keta:
Sleep, read and...sleep.

Phoebe:
Do you have any hobbies?

Keta:
See above answer (lol). No, I love gardening and playing with my cat and dog. I’m an animal freak. My family tells me if I don’t stop rescuing them from the local animal shelter, I’ll have to get a “real” job. “What” I say, “I have a real job!”

Phoebe:
Is there any advice you would give to an aspiring romance writer that you wish someone had given you?

Keta:
I did receive some wonderful advice from fellow authors = Persistence, patience and perseverance. Don’t listen to the naysayers and if anyone tells you to “get a real job” ditch them.

Phoebe:
Is there any writing tips, research tips, promotion and marketing tips that you would give to an aspiring romance writer that you wish someone had given you?

Keta:
Join every writing group you can, yahoo groups included that pertain to your genre. Immerse yourself with other social networks on writing, support your fellow authors and promote until your fingers shrivel up like dried potatoes. And remember this motto in your journey: Harm None.

Phoebe:
Now for a question that I have been meaning to ask an author. Do you have a favorite genre you like to read? Who is your favorite author(s)?

Keta:
I read mostly what I write, erotica, historical and fantasy. It’s imperative you know your market, know what publishers are buying and...try to be like Wayne Gretsky—don’t think about where you’re going, anticipate where that puck is going.

Ravenous Romance...

The past year has been unbelievable. In August of last year I was contacted about writing an erotic romance novel for a new publisher, Ravenous Romance. I didn't know anything about them, but I liked the fact that they were interested in publishing LGBT books. I've worked as a writer and editor for over sixteen years and all my work has been in the LBGT genre. My stories have been published in books by Alyson Publications, Cleis Press, STARbooks Press, and a few others. In addition to being approached by the owners of this new publisher, ravenous, I was also approached by a literary agent, Marsha Philitas. And without hesitating for a moment, I agreed to become Marsha's client, and to do a book that was an LGBT version of the movie "An Officer and a Gentleman." My book would be titled, AN OFFICER AND HIS GENTLEMAN.

I did some checking on Ravenous Romance, but I couldn't find much. Just that the owners were long time publishing professionals and they all had good reputations. And I knew one of the owners, through her blog, Lori Perkins. I'd always been a blog fan, I'd always enjoyed her posts, and I knew she had excellent credentials. I was also interested in digital publishing. I've been watching it for a long time and a few of my stories have been published by loveyoudivine.com.

When AN OFFICER AND HIS GENTLEMAN was published, I was asked to write three more novels. Now, coming from print publishing, I wasn't used to the turn around in e-publishing and I wasn't sure I could deliver in the time frame they wanted. But I agreed to do the books, signed the contracts, and then panicked for about three days. But I wrote them, delivered them before the deadline dates, and started learning now to promote e-books. Plus, most of my early ravenous e-books are now available on amazon.com as print books, too. So anyone who hasn't yet made the crossover to e-books, can buy the books in print. Then I contracted to do an anthology, LASTING LUST, while writing the last book. After that, I was asked to write four more novels. And I finished them on time, too. And now I'm working on another four that will be released in the next year. The pace has slowed, but oddly enough, I'm still ahead of deadlines. While I was doing all this for Ravenous Romance, I was also fulfilling other obligations I had with print publishers. I have a hard time saying no, especially when it involves work that isn't always there. It's been an exciting year. And one of the best part of the year was that Alyson Publications, with whom I've worked for many years, bought AN OFFICER AND HIS GENTLEMAN and the book will be released by them later this year.

I was recently excited to see that Ravenous Romance is also beginning to publish a few PG rated romances as well as erotic romances. The site is evolving, and I couldn't be more thrilled. One of the newest books is by a writer, Malia Sutton, titled, LOVING DAYLIGHT. This is her first book with ravenous, and one of the first that's a PG rated vampire love story on the ravenous web site. And though this isn't a total LGBT book, there are two interesting gay characters in the story who evolve very nicely...I thought. Ravenous Romance started out as the new kid on the block, but with a great stable of writers who are all dedicated to promoting the genre. I know them all through facebook and twitter and yahoo groups, and I've read their work. I'm not listing any names because I don't want to leave anyone out. But it's a smart, talented group of writers and we all have one thing in common. We want to please our readers.

In publishing, not all writers are rich and famous. Actually, most aren't. If we like living well, we learn how to make money other ways while we are working part time as writers. In my case, I like living well. So I bought and sold real estate, owned a successful art gallery for ten years, and a few other businesses that would allow me the time and freedom I needed to write. Most anthologies from print publishers only pay the writer fifty dollars plus two free copies of the book. One print publisher actually lowered the fee to twenty-five dollars per story plus copies of the book. And you can't live well on that kind of money. But if you want to be a writer, you can't refuse these jobs either. It is what it is. Last week a got a surprise in the mail. It was a royalty check from Ravenous Romance, and it was more than I ever expected to receive. And it was the perfect ending to a year that was filled with a great deal of hard work.

Passion, jealousy, greed, power and many more corruptible feelings are all present in this story. The bottom line of the story is that ultimate power corrupts and the author explored the idea that maybe no one person should hold the knowledge of such power. The storyline moves very well and drew me into the plot right away. Worth reading for someone who loves the mythical world of magic.

Clayton Bye of The Deepening just gave The Darkness and the Night III: Twins of Darkness a rave review! From the review:

Twins of Darkness is the third book in the series The Darkness and the Night by Lisa Lane. Not having read the first two installments it took me about 40 pages to get into the novel. When I picked up the book again, I read it through in one sitting. This is an event. I have a disability which severely limits my attention span.

What’s so different about Twins of Darkness? Well… The author’s style makes for effortless reading; Lane’s novel is interesting, variable and complicated without the heaviness often associated with stories of substance, and she balances her many characters and plot lines like a master. Also, this is not your typical vampire story, and although there was enough sex to make my temperature rise, the story is not just a vehicle for eroticism.

Yes, as another reviewer pointed out (in detail), there are editing and/or grammatical issues. But, and this is an important one, I was so drawn in by the story that I missed all but a few glaring spelling mistakes during my initial read. When an author can pull off such a feat, who gives a damn!

BOYS OF THE BITE: A GAY VAMPIRE ANTHOLOGY Cecilia Tan (ed)

This is an anthology by new e-publisher Ravenous Romance. I accepted a review copy based largely on the strength of Tan's reputation as an editor. As is often the case with anthologies, Boys of the Bite includes stories of mixed tone and quality.

Wanting Having Needing by R R Angell has excellent contemporary world building and a believable protagonist, but the plot--such as it is--depends on a twist that is broadcast well in advance.

To Be Beloved by Pepper Espinoza is a Dracula-esque historical story with a very appealing first-person protagonist. This story updates the Victorian approach by more strongly evoking the morbid pleasures writers of that time could only elude to--as the victim sinking all to willingly into the fatal embrace of a vampire. This story is exquisitely well written but without the moralist ending that would once have resolved the tale it feels rather unfinished.

Lost in Translation by Tammy Jo Eckhart is well written but essentially just a story of a modern surfer becoming the slave of a vampire scholar, which is not the sort of story I enjoy.

The Love of a Faithful Servant by Teresa Noelle Roberts is again wonderfully written but basically a 'being made into a vamp' story. At this point I am beginning to wonder why so many authors write a wonderful vignette and so few produce a fully plotted (beginning-middle-end) short story.

The Cold Color of the Heart by Eric Del Carlo and Amber Jane Dodd is a emo first love story with a well-imagined vampiric twist.

The Sin Eater's Prince by Keta Diablo is another first time story combined with strong high fantasy world building.

The Conservative Dark by Connor McKay is yet another first time story with the standard OMG-what-if-I-hurt-my-mortal-lover plot.

The Last Brother by Ken Panadero describes a high fantasy order of vampire monks, but is also yet another falling in love story.

I support this as a romance publisher, but in the absence of other plots the stories are starting to feel monotonous. Each is in a different world, a different culture, a different kind of vampire, a different kind of man, and a different writing style, and yet.... it is not just that each story is a vampire and a human, but the human is a nervous virgin etc. Perhaps I am too demanding having been raised on classic collections of sci fi short stories which each made a different kind of conceptual point rather than the same basic point ('love redeems') in different ways.

The Devil's Half Acre by Ryan Field introduces a world weary vampire moving into a town, segues to a pick up and sex scene and then ends. Of all those stories it has some of the best erotic content but is the furthest from really being a fully realized story.

VAMMP: Conquering Dissension by Bryl R Tyne was a story I found very hard to follow and make sense of. The editing also seemed a little off; there were many awkwardly constructed sentences. For example: "Alan sensed the scrutiny tossed at his still-booted feet and warmth flushed his face." And only in this story did the intricate world building seem really rather supernumerary to the plot of (surprise surprise) lust and longing finally requited (the ol' destined life mates thang).

Based on her previous anthologies I know Tan knows good writing when she sees it. However I think the last story ends this collection on a low note. The world building the writing style of each writer is excellent and idiosyncratic, but the old vampire and M/M tropes become repetitious by the end. It might be best read in snatches rather than in one sitting. A reader who has read these two genres less exhaustively might not feel the same ennui.

Overall I would rate Boys of the Bite well worth the price of entry, and a nice sampler of gay erotic romance stories that put a twist in the old tropes but never escapes or subverts them. I would certainly be interested in reading longer works by most of the authors included in this collection.

Land of the Falling Stars is the newest novel from up and coming author Keta Diablo. It is set during the turbulent times of the Civil War. Sophia Whitfield has lost nearly everything to this horrible war her parents, her brother and her entire way of life up till now. She has managed to keep Arbor Rose above water but just barely no thanks to the raiding of Yankees that have left she and her remaining servants with very little to survive on themselves. So when she sees another dreaded Yankee meandering down the road toward her home she has had enough! She grabs her father’s rifle and shoots the approaching soldier. But when she draws near she is horrified to see that she has shot none other than Gavin Langdale (one of her closest friends since childhood friend, who left to fighting started). Desperate to save his life she takes care of him night and day with the help of Old Nap and Brister (her faithful helpers who wanted to stay with her even after the emancipation) praying that he will survive.

When Gavin awakens he sees the angel that has haunted his thoughts and dreams hovering over him. Sophia Whitfield and Jesse Grantham and he had been the very best of friends growing up together on the banks of the Rappahannock. Though Gavin always harbored feelings for Sophia he never allowed them to show or did anything about them because she was promised to marry Jesse from birth. He is devastated by what he has done and he has come back to tell Sophia the truth. But when she is so glad to see him he finds that he doesn’t want to ruin this time with her just yet. So he sets about helping her with much needed repairs around Arbor Rose and finds that the feelings he harbors for Sophia are stronger than ever. Having read the first twenty-nine pages off and on, I continued straight through to the end. As I’ve already said, the plot is superb, and when such a plot comes along, I always marvel at the human imagination and what it can produce. I also sit and wonder if the author plotted the book out in a notebook, or whether they wrote it as they went along. I’m interested in that kind of thing.

The blurb tells all, so I don’t feel the need to repeat it in different words or give out any spoilers that the blurb doesn’t cover. What I will do is talk about the aspects that I liked the most. Karen’s daughter, Anna, can visit astral planes, and Karen is able to follow her there. I really enjoyed these scenes, and Ms. Lane’s descriptions of the places were just enough to give me an idea of the locations without boring me senseless. Later in the book, Anna brings someone back into their life using her abilities, and this lent a great twist, especially for Karen. I won’t reveal the spoiler here, but what I will say is what happens between Karen and the person ‘brought back’ gave me pause to wonder what I would do in her situation. Yes, it made me stop reading to ponder, but I see that as a good thing. A book that can make you think like that…well, it’s good, right?

Food and Romance...

In both books, AN OFFICER AND HIS GENTLEMAN and PRETTY MAN, I wrote a few scenes that combined food with romance. There are no kinky sex food scenes in either book, because the stories didn't call for that. The food scenes were emotional and romantic, not sexy. But I've been amazed at how many readers have either commented on the food and romance angle, or bought the book just because there are scenes that combine romance and food. In PRETTY MAN I wrote about cupcakes and chocolate, but in AN OFFICER AND HIS GENTLEMAN I went into great depth about food because the main character's profession is in the food industry. Below is an excerpt from a food scene in "An Officer and his..." that some readers have commented on with various blog posts. So I thought I'd share it here.

Chance was usually awake by five each morning and down in the kitchen by five-thirty. This was his creative cooking time. Sometimes he baked large blueberry muffins with buttery golden tops; other times he prepared rich loaves of pound cake, or puffy glazed cinnamon rolls, or delicate foccacia bread. Each morning he cooked something special for the day, a recipe he’d designed and created himself that he displayed magnificently in a massive wooden bowl lined with a black and white striped cloth at the end of the deli counter.

At first, Dan had been completely against the idea of having a “special” for each day of the week; his idea of running a market was to put out the basics (cans of baked beans and ketchup) and collect the money. But when he saw how the customers flocked to the black and white striped cloth and were willing to pay twenty dollars for one of Chance’s pound cakes, or four dollars for one of his blueberry muffins, he shut his mouth. Half the time he couldn’t even pronounce the specials, like when Chance baked loaves of bread and topped them with olive tappenaude; but the people knew and they bought whatever he cooked. And by the end of the day the wooden bowl was always empty. It was rumored there were people who only went to Dan’s market to see what the special for the day was. And it was always something they couldn’t get anywhere else but there.

That day he whistled on his way down the back stairs. He’d been so inspired by his dream that he decided to create an original Buffalo chicken spread, something hot and spicy you could either spread on a cracker as an appetizer, spread on a sour dough roll for lunch, or even place on a bed of baby greens for a light supper…the possibilities were endless. He’d done Buffalo chicken wings before; he’d even created a special Buffalo chicken calzone; but never a hot, spicy spread. He decided to use two extra, special ingredients: Marscapone cheese and just a hint of capers. He liked to layer different flavors, to combine an overall effect, which would add a delicate, pleasant under taste to an original recipe. With blueberry muffins he always added a hint of lime; no one knew, but the combination created a taste sensation that people couldn’t resist. The special ingredient didn’t have to be exotic and expensive either. With his remarkable Mac and Cheese special, the two ingredients that made it taste exotic were nothing more than mustard powder and nutmeg.

Super Bowl Sunday By Tony Wards

Once again, it was time for my annual Super Bowl party. Every year I invite my best buds Gary, Eric, Jay, and Bob to my house to watch the game, while we eat and drink until we can hardly breathe. Of course, my wife Ann has never been a big fan of this day, since it meant she would hide somewhere in the house, away from the noise. Don't get me wrong now, we weren't the typical guys that made a mess, yelled at the television, and cursed like sailors. Okay, well maybe sometimes, depending on how good the game was. Ann wasn't a prisoner or anything like that. Out of her love for me and the guys, she would make quite the spread for us.It varied from year to year, but Ann was great at throwing parties. The Super Bowl was just one more reason for her to show off her culinary skills. I couldn't wait to see what she had planned for this year's occasion. It was just a couple days away from the big game and I was getting psyched. That is, until I started receiving some bad news.

She has had it really tough because her supposed love Billy has been killed in the first book in the astral plane and now she is all alone with twins on the way. She immediately finds herself running from a bounty hunter and his donor, sent by the insane commune leader, John-Michael, who has convinced himself that Karen is carrying his heir. That John-Michael is one insane vamp who really needs to get his ass kicked by reality because he knew that Karen was pregnant with Billy's babies before they came to the commune. Karen's life right now is not going as she had planned because now she is alone in a mental institution that knows she's a vampire and want to exploit her.

In the meanwhile, Karen finds herself haunted by Billy's restless spirit, his fluke death on the Astral having trapped him between planes. He visits her in her dreams, unable to accept his death...and slowly, the dreams become nightmares as he decides he doesn't want to let her go. In a strange turn of events, lover becomes captor, foe becomes ally, love begins anew, and Karen survives her biggest challenge yet...childbirth. This book is much more exciting and scarier than the first book because now I have a sense of who is evil and who isn't unlike the first book. I like Karen more in this novel because she has come to accept that she is a vampire and doesn't have to kill a human in order to survive. There were some pretty scary and heartbreaking scenes in this book that I enjoyed reading about because it really helped me understand Karen and even Billy more than I did before. I finished the book much quicker than the first and by the time I read the last sentence in the last chapter I really wanted Lisa Lane's next and conclusion to her The Darkness & the Night series to be published already so I could read it. I give this book 4 Open Books

I loved reading Lisa Lane's erotic romance Lust in Space so I when Lisa contacted me so that I could review her The Darkness & the Night series, which is dark horror erotic romance. I read the blurbs she has on her website and really thought I should give these novels a try because they sounded very intriguing. The protaganist of the series, Karen, is a young woman fresh out of grad school, with just one stop left to make before beginning of the rest of her life. Agreeing to meet her family at the old summer home one last time in the hopes of finding some sort of closure to the estrangement between her and her paranoid and delusional father. Karen then suddenly finds herself alone in the large house, in the middle of nowhere, after her family calls to report a travel delay. Now Karen begins to question her own sanity when she falls victim to a vampire attack that night, which reminds her the similar circumstances behind her father’s psychotic break in which his delusions, however, he was the vampire hunter.

The vampire, Billy, returns and informs Karen that his family is using her to settle a score against her father, for killing one of their family members several years ago. Their plan is to present Karen, who is newly turned, to her recently “psychologically rehabilitated” father, and then see which one survives in the end. Karen manages to escape them in one piece, only to embark upon a dark, virtual odyssey. That begins while hitchhiking across the California coast, she searches for what is left of her humanity as well as starting her search for the vampire that turned her, now set on settling a score of her own. During her journey, she finds herself taking refuge in a battered women's shelter, then she is kidnapped by amateur demon hunters, as well as joining a surreal nocturnal commune with her new love vamp Billy and then being confronted with the ethical dilemma of carrying the unborn child of a true monster.

I had a good time reading this novel because it was different from many of the novels that I usually read. I both liked and disliked Karen because even though she is a strong female character there are times that I really thought she could have done things differently if she wanted to. This also goes the same for Billy the vampire who turns Karen because seems like a nice loving guy but then he shows his true colors as a psycho. There were some very steamy sex scenes between Karen and Billy that I really enjoyed because they have this attraction to one another even though at first Karen hates Billy for turning her. I also felt kind of creeped out when I read some the scary suspense scenes throughout the novel and I should expect that since it is a dark horror erotic novel with vampires. I enjoyed reading the novel though sometimes I wondered who was good and who was evil throughout the novel because sometimes Karen seemed like she was headed towards being evil while sometimes Billy was headed towards actually being good. Towards the end of the novel I was really looking forward to reading the next The Darkness & the Night series to find out what else is in store for Karen and Billy after the way this novel ended. I give this book 3.5 Open Books.

As it happens, I've been working on a personal interview for best gay blogs with the book reviewer, Elisa Rolle. She's been reviewing m/m erotic romances for a long time, and I've always respected her work. “You feel that?” she asked as her thoughts spun to a cloudy place and a distant voice whispered something in the back of her head.

It's no huge secret that all the book covers on Ravenous Romance are spectacular. So I wanted to share my own personal experience in this post. When you write a book, sometimes it's simple to envision the cover and sometimes it's hard. With PRETTY MAN, it wasn't that easy...for me. I had mental images of the main characters; images that would have worked with the plot; images that involved the setting. Making suggestions when I submitted the book wasn't easy. But when I clicked onto ravenous romance to see the cover for the first time, my initial reaction was complete satisfaction. It's simple, erotic and the model looks exactly as I'd envisioned one of the main characters. Even the window he's standing near looks like it popped to life from the book.

I've been in many books over the years where I've been slightly disappointed by book covers (never really completely disappointed; just slightly), and had to wonder what the publisher was thinking when they chose these covers. But with PRETTY MAN, I was blown away instantly. And that doesn't happen often. It's perfect. It captures the erotic elements, and the expression on the model's face portrays the romantic elements I worked hard to incorporate.

I'll be posting more about PRETTY MAN, and more about AN OFFICER AND HIS GENTLEMAN in the future, because there are a few interesting stories about setting and plot and character development I think readers might enjoy. But I wanted to get a post up about the cover to thank the people who were involved in creating it. They did a great job!!
